There are many shows that while critically acclaimed still don’t get the kind of ratings that a television network needs to help justify the cost of keeping it on the air. The sad fact is that many great shows are cancelled well before they are able to even build a proper story arc or gain fans. Here is a list of three great television shows that were cancelled too early.

“Carnivale”

This oddball HBO series planned for six seasons was cut short after being cancelled after only two seasons, effectively leaving many plot points hanging and frustrating long-time fans of the series. Since the cancellation, the writer and creator, Daniel Knauf has since revealed to fans the plot lines and stories of the final seasons, effectively shutting down any hopes that the show will return to finish what it started.

“Swingtown”

With only one season, and just when the stories were starting to gain some momentum and go to interesting places, the plug was pulled on this 1970s based period drama about suburban ennui, open marriages and the sexual revolution. The star of the show was Molly Parker who broke into the mainstream with her role in “Kissed”, “The Center of the World” and “Deadwood.” It would have been nice to have one final season to close some of the stories and leave the show on a good note.

“Wonderfalls”

Few people even remember this odd little comedy-drama which centered on a college graduate with a philosophy degree who worked a dead-end job as a sales clerk at a Niagra Falls gift shop. Sure the premise was almost too quirky for its own good and the characters were wackier than a bird cage full of loonies but so was “Arrested Development” and that was a huge success. After barely one season, the show was cancelled by Fox and shopped around to other networks but none were interested. The WB should have picked it up and put it in a good time slot, but alas, that did not happen.
